900 Players - Biggest Tournament Thursday 10th of July 2003 About 900 children from 13 primary schools in Windhoek took part in a knock out tournament at the Engineering Campus of the Polytechnic. After five games of chess seventy-two finalists have emerged who will compete in a junior tournament together with top junior players from the rest of Namibia during the third term, so as to determine the 2003 Junior Champion. The names of the finalists and their schools are listed below. Proceedings were opened by an introduction from Mr. Horsthemke; President of the Namibian Chess Federation werafter Dr.Tchama Tjivukua of the Polytechnic, Mr. Titus, headmaster of Emma Hoogenhout Primary School and the patron of chess Mr.Frans Kapofi (Secretary to the Cabinet) spoke a few words. The acting director of education Ms N./Goagoses was also a guest of honour. A big Thank You to Standard Bank of Namibia who sponsored the event with N$ 15,000, which enabled the purchase of the necessary chess equipment. Coca-cola Namibia was also present with some much-appreciated contri-bution of cool-drink for the thirsty multi-tude. One can take it that this was number wise probably the big-gest junior chess event held to date in Africa.
