CORPORATE SOCCER TOURNAMENT held by the WBCG HIV/AIDS Help Desk Friday 27th of July 2007 The Help Desk through its’ Walvis Bay-based Peer Educators Support Group Forum held a 3-day corporate soccer tournament over the weekend (6th – 8th July 2007) at the Kuisebmond Soccer Stadium in Walvis Bay. The purpose of the tournament was to engage the fishing and transport industries in and around Walvis Bay in the battle against HIV/AIDS in an effort to raise funds for a local support group of People Living with HIV/AIDS. The soccer match was preceded by a march and truck convoy through [Sam Nujoma Drive] the town center to the Kuisebmond Soccer Stadium on Friday 6th July 2007. Approximately 15 trucks representing national transport companies (who are also members of the WBCG HIV/AIDS Help Desk), namely: TranNamib, Namport, WesBank and F.P du Toit Transport, to mention but a few, paraded through the town center marking the HIV/AIDS Awareness Campaign and Corporate Soccer Tournament. The Corporate Soccer Tournament commenced on the Friday afternoon and was attended by the Walvis Bay Urban Constituency Councillor (Hon. Hafeni Ndemula, MP) Walvis Bay Mayor (Clr. D. Klazen) as well as other local authority councillors and MD’s and GM’s from the local companies. The following companies took part in the tournament: Unitrans, Trans-Namib (Pty)Ltd., Namport, F.P du Toit Transport, Manica Group Nami-bia, Transworld Cargo, Walvis Bay Stevedoring, Etale Fishing, Hangana Seafood, the Namibian Navy, Namsov Fishing, Maxwilili Old Crocks, Merlus Seafood, Seaworks, Walvis Bay Prison, Antibodies, Namibia Airports Company, Ministry of Fisheries and Resources, Westhook, Moods Move Project and G4 Security. The tournament was well attended by members of the public and supported by the HIV/AIDS awareness support programmes: Social Marketing Association and True Love Waits. The tournament was won by Hangana Seafood, who beat Mood Mono Project (2-1). A total of 24 teams competed in the tournament on a knock-out basis. The soccer teams were comprised of peer educators from the Walvis Bay Corridor Group members and non-member companies (from the fishing industry). The following companies participated in the tournament: The funds raised from the event will be equally distributed to two organizations identified and selected by the Peer Educators, namely: the Panduleni Trust (in support of their baby feeding programme for children who are born by mothers infected with HIV who cannot breastfeed the children themselves) and the Catholic Aids Action (in support of their Clown Project). The Walvis Bay Corridor Group HIV/AIDS Help Desk was established in 2003 with the primary objective of addressing HIV/AIDS effectively in the transport sector. It is a joint approach to address HIV/AIDS in the transport sector. The WBCG HIV/AIDS Help Desk currently has a membership of eleven (10) transport companies with offices all over Namibia. |
