Marion Schelkle's Luka-Speech

Friday 7th of September 2007

Marion Schelkle, Chief of Protocoll, had this to say:
Ten times Lüka - and today I stand
for the 9th time with a speech in my hand.
Learning a text off by hear - that I could never do,
But first of all let me tell you Who is Who:

Today she lives in the UK - manages the bowling.
Yes, Penny - our thanks go out to you -
She liked the Carnival in Otji - and made it true!
With Walter as first President - and Gerd as a Prince
we‘ve done it now ten times ever since!
I joined in - good hunour has always been my passion -
at our second Carnival was my debut with a rhyming session.

The Nest Hotel‘s foundations had just been cast -
So close on the water - my prediction:  this cannot last
So I was wrong - no auarium view - laughing Tom had much fun -
But another session - in Kolmanskop - another backfired pun:
I had a go at the Waterfront - it was the wrong call -
My jokes were not appreciated - and Mr T. left the hall!
At every rehearsal - most of us pissed and jolly -
I tripped and fell into a hole on the stage - oh golly!

Gone with the Wind - oder: Vom Winde verweht -
Niemand weet hoeveel wolkasempies Johan geskilder het!
We all sat on a - this time visual - cloud in Kolmanskop
With a record attendance - 300 people came there to dop!
There, where the pioneers once found them stones -
Close to Charlottental with all its bones,
We shuttled our guests out and back home -
Had to resort to unplugged music when the lights went down
The Grafsteen Sangers with bare bottoms also appeared
The Full Monty boys stripped - the people yelled and cheered!
James Duffus as Mr. Bean, Hefty Ladies as the Big 5!

With „no law in the net“, we then woke up to a new harbour underway
Prince Ulf and Princess Linda welcomed the new Waterfront to the Bay, B
But the forbidden finger became a trophy to be earned
As usual - afterwards nobody seemed concerned!

Yes, Carnival brought Kolmanskop back to life!
Before every event the toilets needed to be freed from the sand
Now matter how intoxicated, everyone came to dig and lend a hand.!

We should not forget our Gardegirls - every one on the dot -
A year later they came to the show with a carrycot!
This town most certainly produced a Lüka generation
Well - someone needs to carry on with this jolly tradition!
Yeah - 2 presidents later and still 11 guys in a row -
Lüka moved to the Turnhalle to carry on with the show
This historic venue needs a good tradition
Kereping it going - it now is Lüka‘s home - a perfect solution!

With „Alles kleine Fische“ - more than 300 from this net hung suspended
All the way on Küska‘s pirate floats - that‘s where they ended!
Two years ago - with not  much funds in our tills
But we needed to stage a Carnival - and foot the bills -
Dollar coiuns replaced the fishes - all the money we had
But Lüderitz without a Carnival - that would have been sad!

10 Mottos, 10 royal photos up in the club, 10 coaches on display
10 years railway construction - will they ever finish one day?
OUR rails lead all the way to our station in this hall -
The Lüka train arrives on time - in two years is our next call!
We also call on you fun-loving Buchters - do an act, a funny play -
There surely are many hidden talents in the Bay.
After 10 years I have done my time - now I rest my case
Now it is time for someone new to take this place -
Despite all the work - I also had much fun - es war toll -
Lüka braucht einen neuen Chef fürs Protokoll!
Carnival is the highlight for the Lüderitz folk -
Forget all your worries - tell us a joke!
Keinkak - no shit - we did it
And boy - ten times everyone enjoyed it!
You are all Buchters tonight - no-one is an outsider
Let‘s drink to 10 years Lüka und so weiter und so weiter...

Carnival also means that the jesters ruyle the City - so here were the Royal couples of Luderitz (including the Childrens Couple, from Witclei and Windhoek waiting for the Mayor to hand over the key to the Town... which Mayoress Amupewa gladly did: she handes the key to Princess Monica and Privce Manni, telling them to keep the Town in good order... ... here she gives some good advice to Prince Manni...... and then she posed with the Elferrat (Committee), who organise such a traditional event. Visitors to Luderitz said they were very impressed with the clean town - and especially with the Carnival which was “a real beautiful attraction for all different people and cultures”
