Donation of 4000 Computers for Namibia

Microsoft has pledged 4000 computers to be installed at most Namibian schools in all 13 regions. They will not only be used by learners to become computer literate, but will be utilised after school by adult citizens to learn more about parliament and democracy. Briefing media on the project this week the Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr Mosé Tjitendero said since 1997 the secretariat of the National Assembly did annual visits to all 13 regions under the theme "Taking Parliament to the People", launched its website in 2001 and the same year introduced a mobile training unit, being a bus equipped with computers and telecommunications facilities assisted by USAID, the Namibia Democratic Institute, Microsoft, Compaq and a local computer company. The bus was visiting the regions regularly. All these initiative received recognition from Nepru and the World Bank. A further step this year was to install 130 computers at 13 schools, one school in each region. Practical issues like what times the citizenry could make use of the computers after school, their maintenance and protection against theft would be worked out within the next 12 months, before the 4000 PC’s would be installed at the other schools. The first school to receive 10 computers was Eden Primary School in Okahandja on Thursday.
