The Buchter needs Help

While looking for somebody to take a photo in Lüderitzbucht, the first thought of the PLUS editorial office was to phone the colleagues of The Buchter, the monthly newsletter in English. The two young ladies, volunteers from Britain, wanted to help, but could not. "We unfortunately do not have a digital camera," one of them said. PLUS traced somebody else down there with a digital camera, but curiosity about The Buchter prevailed.

A couple of e-mails later PLUS found out from the Buchter Girls, as they are affectionately called, that the newsletter first appeared 16 years ago in June 1987.

In the first edition the following was stated: "We are a publication which hopes to serve the communities of Benguela, Nautilus and Lüderitz. These communities, both varied and alive, have no information service or local paper, and many people who live in one community do not know what is going on in the other two. Perhaps at least we can show a little of what goes on and draw a link between the three communities. With this newssheet, we aim to provide news of what is happening here in Lüderitzbucht: announcements, local stories and a mixture of reviews." The aim was to serve the township communities.

Well, things changed quite a lot since then. Over the years Lüderitz itself has changed drastically and the role overseas volunteers have to play has also changed. The newspaper is now 16 pages long and is produced on a Pentium 4 computer with windows XP software. A printer could be acquired but the two volunteers that come out since 1987 for 12 months don’t have a digital camera or scanner.

"We don’t need a fax machine as hardly anybody faxes us and we currently use somebody else’s and although a scanner would be lovely it is the digital camera which would make a real difference", the two present Buchter Girls told PLUS.

The newspaper is still contributed to and distributed by all aspects of the diverse Lüderitz community and is helped financially by Namdeb (the main sponsor providing housing and sponsorship of the volunteers), Namzinc, the Nest Hotel and Novanam. The charity, which sends out volunteers each year to Lüderitz, is called Project Trust and they are located in Scotland. They have been going for 33 years and each year send about 200 school leavers between the ages of 17 and 19 to over 25 countries worldwide. Their aim is to give each volunteer the opportunity to learn about an entirely different culture by living and working in it for a year and in that time as well as learning a lot for themselves that they are able to give something back to the community they live in. Most of the projects are teaching ones and on top of the newspaper, the Buchter Girls teach at two schools. The Lüderitz project of the trust is the only journalistic project and one of the longest running projects (16 years).

If anyone can help with donations in cash or kind to help The Buchter acquire a scanner - even a second hand one – and a digital camera, please either contact The Buchter at buchter@africaonline.com.na or at 063-204171.
