Friday 12th of March 2004 Dear Editor / News Reporter, Caution, caution and once again caution!!! I would like to apply my attention to the attacks on the judiciary, after Judge Elton Hoff’s ruling on the 13 high treason suspects. The allegations the last days by people like Mr Kapia and Mr. Ilonga were serious and at the very least intimidating and a gross interference with the exercise of judicial functions (article 78 of the Namibian Constitution) - the independent character of the judicial system). No! We as leaders have to be much more cautious in our statements. We all need to contribute to the further development of peace in our beautiful country. If we fail our judicial system, we fail in our commitment to the execution of fair judgment. Namibia has been so far praised for its adherence to democratic values and an independent judicial system. Don’t put this into jeopardy, please. Careless statements by leaders can cause irreparable damage. We have to keep in mind that as an independent (and globally exposed) country, the image of our country may be severely tarnished by such statements. On the other hand, positive contri-butions by these people can only contribute to peace and well-being. Let us all work together to prosper peace and harmony in our country. Sincerely, Henry G Platt (Ph.D) (Moderator: Uniting Reformed Church) |
