Katutura Stadium Ready in December Sunday 23rd of May 2004 The Katutura Stadium was constructed in the late 60’s and demolished in July 1999. In 2001 the City Council decided to build a new stadium with a capacity of 8000 spectators. After heavy rains, the date of completion had to be shifted from November to the 7th December 2004. As Nghinamwaami stressed: "This stadium is not to gain profits, but it is a social investment", costing N$ 61 million. The City of Windhoek revealed key figures and features for the stadium on Tuesday, e.g. that to operate the stadium will cost N$ 3 million annually (security and maintenance). It is the most attractive and modern stadium in Namibia: with four masts for lighting (each 30 meters high), a Grand stand with distribution boards, telephones etc., Parking facilities for 72 VIPs, 5 player busses, 120 VIP stands and 460 public parking spaces. The Grand stand west will have 4000 seats, the Open stand east another 2000 and the Open stand north another 1000. tthe open stand south will also have 1000 seats and provision for future possible extensions is made to accommodate 2000 to 4000 more spectators. Sport, art and culture is essential to human development. The City is planning to host a fund raising dinner under the Patron of the Katutura Soccer Stadium, Hon Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hidipo Hamutenya to raise additional funds. So far, phase 1 (civil & earth works) is 98% completed and will be 100 % by the end of May 2004. Phase 2 will cost N$ 44 million for Construction of the stadium plus parking, electrical, grassing, crowd control channel etc. |
