To stimulate the love and awareness amongst the sports lovers in the Samora Machel Constituency, the City of Windhoek took a decision to upgrade this field in order for it to be useful and productive for the residents of that area.

It was during this process that the City of Windhoek chamnges the name to John ya Otto Nankudhu in recognition to the unwaivered contribution he made in the liberation struggle and to the consequent independence of the country.

The renaming of the Wanaheda-Soccerfield was done through a democratic process which involved suggestion of prominent names by the citizens. The suggestord names were the Oshakati Service Station Stadium, Friendly Grocers Stadium and the Wanaheda Soccer Stadium and the John ya Otto Nankudhu Stadium. The latter name was recommended.

The renaming in his honour is a clear testimony that the City of Windhoek „takes pride in the heroic contribution made to the independence of this country by all gallant sons and daughters of our beautiful Namibia".

The City of Windhoek is also putting meaning to the resolve of bringing sports closer to the people. „Our Council is through, for and by the people. Our visible investment in social and recreational amenities that are much closer to the aspirations of the people. The usage of this facility shall be orderly and according to laid down rules and . procedures." the Mayor said. „In todays era such facilities are not only used for soccer , but for other socio-cultural needs of the community."

In conclusion the Mayor would like to urge the community to take good care of this property and full respobnsibility for its well-being..

The City of Woindhoek invested around N$ 360 000 for the stadium to lrevel the ground. The main purpose of the upgrading was to accommodate school children for official matches and they must accept the role goiven to them.

The newly appointed Chief Excecutive Officer Niilo Taaipopi thanked the Namibia Beverages through their brand product Coca Cola, Tafel Lager, National Thatre of Namibia for their visible partnership in this project.

„Such developmental projects make our strategic thrust as a Coity true, meaningful and practical and turn our vision and mission from paper slogans to implementable statements of intent". He further acknowledged the community of Wanaheda for their humble contribution . They have demonstrated the purpose of sports development in their constituency.
