Friday 2nd of July 2004 Four seasons in one day in the desert; east winds, fog on the ground, rain clouds and the normal "Benguela-functioning winds". Once again the force of nature supplied the organizers with swell and glassy conditions. A good 6 – 8 foot ground swell in Namibia spawned in the roaring "Forties" that gave the "Dungeons Red Bull Big Wave Challenge" in Cape Town the "amber alert" with 15 – 18 foot monsters came consistently through on both Saturday and Sunday. The end of Carnival in Swakopmund coincided with the beginning of the Namibian Premier Surfing final. The event was closely contested with 27 entrants that were brave enough to face the winter swell and compete with Namibia’s best surfers. The soul surfers could stick with "Guns" while the young and old contestants faced their fears at the challenging "Thicklip" suction barrels. Two boards were snapped together with a few leashes as nature displayed its raw power. A total of five divisions received entrants, open surfing receiving the most followed by bodyboarding, junior surfing, longboarding and development surfing. Ground Rush parachute display and kite-surfing were show-cased together with Namibia’s top surfers. The event was again a huge success with all the fickle elements of nature coming together in unison. Development surfing was contested by some young up and coming talent. Lee James took the title and also took "Most Improved Surfer" trophy. He was challenged by Bianca Hartenstein and Katja Kring who took second and third place respectively. The Longboard event was won by Rod Braby with Hardy Hofmeister and Henner Rodenwoldt closely contesting the title. Henner unfortunately snapped his longboard early on in the final. The bodyboarding crown remained with Shaun Loubser who impressed the judges the most with some very high performance maneuvers. Tyrone Kotze, Aubrey Meyer and Thorsten Viljoen were not far behind. With the numbers of bodyboard contestants swelling there should be space to start a junior division soon. Thorsten Viljoen and Kyle Cyriax would then be the top juniors. Junior surfing had a disappointing turnout with only one heat and five contestants. Craig D’Oliveira took the title of junior champion from Robert Roxin. The remaining positions went to Enric Röttger, Ramon van der Merwe and Franco Horn. Open surfing was fiercely contested with the Namibian open surfing title eventually going to Jay Sarro. Torsten Gossow came a close second with Michi Mater and Henner Rodenwoldt taking third and forth positions. Other awards went to Jay Sarro with the highest scoring wave and Henner Rodenwoldt taking the "Wipe out of the Day". Henner snapped a long and a short board together with a leash, this showed his fearless approach to the monster surf. As mentioned in the beginning the "Most improved Surfer" award went to Lee James. The Judges were Sigi Braby, Marina Loubser, Dale Peppler, Frank Heuschneider and Rod Braby. The main sponsors were Maersk, Radiowave, Hansa Breweries, Get Wet Surf Shop and WB Mica Hardware. Food was sponsored by the Crazy Corner Café and supplied by Hotel Deutsches Haus. The Namibian Surfing Association would like to thank all who helped to make the ninth Namibian National Surfing Championship the great success it was. |
