The National Assembly has approved the 40-year old Mr Junius Etuna Kandjeke as new auditor general on Tuesday. While 13 opposition members voted against this appointment and MAG chairman Kosie Pretorius abstained, all 36 Swapo members present in the House voted for Kandjeke. In a biting speech, DTA president Katuutire Kaura last week virtually tore the official curriculum vitae of Kandjeke to pieces, making fun of the glaring spelling mistakes in the CV. Instead of Lotus courses, it was written "Locus" and instead of refresher courses, the person who typed the document used the word "refreshment courses." Mr Kaura and various other oppositional MP’s pointed out that the candidate was no chartered accountant.

In his reply to the debate Prime Minister Theo-Ben Gurirab on Tuesday stated that neither the Constitution nor in the applicable Act prescribed for the AG to be a chartered accountant. This was only so in South Africa, compared to other SADC countries, Gurirab pointed out. The first AG in Namibia after independence was an engineer, the outgoing Dr Tjingaete and "economic historian," according to Gurirab. There were five other candidates three of them permanent secretaries, he continued. The president’s first choice was however the country’s first black female chartered accountant. In principle she had agreed to take up the post of auditor general, but her conditions were "untenable, so the deal fell through," Gurirab revealed.
